Chemical Plant, Channelsea River, Bow, West Ham, Newham, 1990, 90-9d-46
Various chemical plants occupied the area south of the Channelsea River and spilling out onto Channelsea island since around the 1860s. I think this was a part of the Berk Spencer Acids site which Steetley Chemicals passed to RTZ/Borax in 1983 and which closed around the time I took this picture. These sulphuric acid (vitriol) works were set up by Thomas Bell & Co around 1870, being taken over by F W Berk & Co in the early 1880s. At least two other companies also made sulphuric acid in the area.
