TAUNTON — Sarah Mendonca, Stephanie Stoevska and Mila Dofov knew the perfect spot to grab a bite after getting out of their class at BBB Auto School.
“We wanted a nice spot to come in and get a quick bite to eat, and we saw Devito’s,” Mendonca said.
Devito’s Pizzeria on the Taunton Green is a place for customers to grab some freshly made pizza — or have it delivered.
“Everything is made on the premises,” Michael Cashman said.
Cashman’s wife and co-owner of Devito’s, Dawn Cashman, said everything from the dough to sauces to even chicken wings are made from scratch.
The two both manage and own the building. They found the building going up for auction back in 2008, and paid somewhere around $230,000 for the two-story building.
“He liked the building because he thought it would have a lot of foot traffic,” said Dawn Cashman, 40.
The family-run business has been operating out of its current location at 4 Taunton Green for 14 years, she said.
Michael Cashman, 47, said that the small staff there is tight, a lot of them being family members or friends of the family.
“Our main staff has been here for 10 years with us,” Dawn Cashman said.
She said she did not have much experience with the pizza business going in: She worked for a recycling company in New York until opening Devito’s.
But that was not the same case for her husband, who had been working in a pizza shop since he was 14 years old, she said, for his family’s shop called Pizza Factory, in Newburyport.
The two live in Somerset and have a daughter, Ella Cashman, 8, who likes to provide a helping hand with little things around the business, like folding pizza boxes.
The homemade dough is spread out in a pan where the pizza sauce and toppings such as cheese, pepperoni, onions, peppers and more are then assembled on top. Then the pizza is placed in a conveyor pizza oven, which takes seven minutes to cook the pie.
Once it is ready it is then perfectly sliced and boxed for either delivery or the customer in the dining area.
Devito’s pizza crust is a happy medium of a Greek-style and thin-style pizza crust, Dawn Cashman said.
Aside from their freshly made pizza, Devito’s has a wide variety of choices for their customers: calzones, burgers, onion rings, spaghetti or ziti pasta dishes, and even salads.
Dawn Cashman said they also offer gluten-free pizza for those with dietary restrictions.
A bonus with the large menu is that they offer free delivery to Taunton, Raynham, Dighton, and Berkley with no minimum charge.
She said that when they were forced to close their doors back in March 2020, they did a lot of curb-side orders and deliveries. They have since allowed their customers back inside to order or even sit down in their dining area.
“It is nice to see people back in here again,” she said.
Devito’s Pizzeria is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Lunchtime on Fridays is the busiest time for the business as they get many people coming in or ordering delivery.
“We are thankful for all our customers from Taunton, Dighton, Raynham, and Berkley that have continued to do business with us,” Michael Cashman said.
